Program note:
I have long wanted to compose my own setting of this ancient church text, both as a personal expression of my love for Christ and as a gift to share with others who worship him. The music for this setting grew out of a piano ‘portrait’ I composed in 2022, in memory of my uncle who served as an Anglican priest.
In the ‘Kyrie’ I have aimed for music that evokes simple trust. I take the request ‘Lord, have mercy’ to be both an attitude of humility before God and an expression of trust in his loving character. The ‘Sanctus’ rings out over a continuously rising scale in the bass, pointing ever upwards to God’s transcendent glory. I’ve written the ‘Benedictus’ as a surprising interruption to this, as the text suddenly suggests a possible bridge between us and God, prompting a hushed ‘Hosanna’. The ‘Agnus Dei’ music harks back to the request of the ‘Kyrie’, now answered in the person and work of Christ. I have also written a ‘Gloria’ which attempts to combine heartfelt awe at God’s glory with exuberant celebration.
